Having a content strategy is a great starting point, but for every strategy, you need a tactical plan as well. The information model provides important tactics to support your content strategy. It defines the structural architecture of your deliverables and their components. It serves as a guideline for authors as they write and is an excellent training tool for new authors coming into your company. The model can also influence the requirements for your tool selection and is a specification for optimizing your tool's configuration. It provides information for conversion to your new content strategy and influences the development of your output styles. Despite this importance, many companies do not have an official information model and are, perhaps, daunted by the task of creating one. This workshop provides an opportunity to discuss the following questions and hear how others are approaching the modeling document:

  • Why is an information model important?
  • What should it contain?
  • What is the process for creating one?
  • What are the important things to consider when choosing the standards to include?
  • How can you enforce the model?
  • How should the model be governed?

Takeaways

What should go in an information model, and what considerations are necessary for creating it? How do you enforce it, once written? How should you manage the inevitable changes it may require?
